The challenge

“Mom, I’m here!” Hania announced as he flung open the front door to his childhood home. They had been back from Brazil for three weeks now, and this was his first time stopping by since then. The young hero had been working overtime as Raiden, as if he had to make up for lost time. In fact, he almost felt guilty being away from his city for longer than an hour. He had been in regular contact with both Alicia and Juan, although he had some trouble with Juan considering he was international. Alicia was back in California, but Juan was somewhere near the Carribean Islands. Still though, it was a little liberating to be able to talk about his dual life with someone other than his mother.

“You have a key, you don’t have to announce yourself every time you come in. This isn’t a sitcom.” Naira walked out the kitchen just as Hania was closing the front door. She always got on him whenever he did anything that made him seem like a stranger. Even though he had his own apartment, she always wanted him to consider this as his home. Once his scholarship ran dry, it probably would be his home again anyway. It wasn’t exactly an easy thing to balance college with being a superhero, and he couldn’t imagine it would be any easier to do with adding a job to the mix. His mom had never wanted him to move out in the first place, but Hania wanted some personal space. Mostly, so if something were to happen and he had to return injured, his mother wouldn’t worry.

“I know, I know.” Hania plopped down on the couch, while his mother sat down on the loveseat. The tv was on, albeit mostly serving as background noise. Like his mother, Hania never really watched much tv. They had been catching up with what was going on in each other’s lives the past three weeks; mostly Hania talking about the criminals that he had busted, when Naira’s house phone rang.

“Hello? Oh, hi Kylie!” Naira looked over to see her son shaking his head and putting his finger to his lips. She stared, not so much because she didn’t understand the gestures he was making, but because she expected an explanation. “No, I haven’t seen Hania. He’s probably asleep somewhere. I’ll let him know you’re looking for him.” Hania’s mother glared at him. She wasn’t one to lie, but normally she was a little more understanding when it involved Hania’s superhero life. This didn’t seem to be the case. “He hasn’t returned your text messages in three days? You’re right, that’s not like the social butterfly that he is. I’m sure he’s okay though.” She hung up the phone and looked at her son. Hania hated that look; that motherly look that spelled disappointment.

“It’s not like that, I swear! I’m just sore from all the fighting and I need a little time to recover.” Hania explained. It didn’t seem to satisfy his mother, however.
